Assignments

| Anthropology Project | Due: 07/21/2025 | If you chose the archaeological site or zoo project, did you include at least five images? You should embed your photos right into your paper and label them - if you have any videos they can be uploaded as separate files.

If you chose the oral history project, do you have at least three direct quotes included in your paper? Be sure to carefully review your project description and grading rubric before you submit your paper. | | --- | --- | --- | | | General Description | Read through the general description below and then go check out the individual project descriptions in the submodules below.

For this project I asking you to actually “do” anthropology. This assignment has two parts. The first is an actual experience in which you document what you observe - for some project you'll also take photos.

The second is writing a 700-800 word paper that describes, discusses, and summarizes that experience. | | | | Part 1: You have three options for this project:

  1. Visit and archaeological site. You will need to take notes, take photos, and answer a series of questions about the site and the ancient culture that lived there. Your site must have an accessible museum or visitor’s center.

Note: Some local sites, like Petroglyph National Monument, are NOT a good fit for this project. Please see the list of suggested sites for this project below.

  1. Conduct an interview in which you collect an oral history from someone. You will need to take careful notes or record the interview.

  2. Study non-human primates at the zoo. Pick two distinct non-human primates and observe their behavior. You will need to take notes and photos.

**More information about each of these projects is available in the individual project descriptions below – MAKE SURE you carefully read through each before choosing one.

Part 2: You will need to write a 700-800 word, double-spaced paper (1 inch margins, Times New Roman) and upload your paper as a Word doc or pdf (no other formats please). You do NOT need to submit in your notes for any of the projects. Photos (if applicable) should be embedded right into your paper. Make sure to carefully review the assignment description about your chosen project for more information about how to write that particular paper. | | | | You will only choose ONE of the projects below.

Option 1: Visit an Archaeological Site Visit an Archaeological Site - Assignment Description (Word doc) Sites You Could Visit - CLICK HERE for a list

13 In this folder are links to the websites of local archaeological sites that would work for this project. This is by no means an exhaustive list - if you visit and/or learn of other sites you think will work for this project please let me know and I'll add them.

Remember that your site needs have a prehistoric component (before the European invasion). However, many local sites have both a prehistoric and a Spanish component - that is fine, as long as you focus on the prehistoric component in your paper.

Your site must also have a museum or visitor's center that provides information about the site - it will be very difficult to answer all the questions in this assignment if it doesn't have a visitor's center or museum.

I highly recommend taking a tour with a ranger if you can!

Note: Petroglyph National Monument is NOT a good fit for this project. ——————————————————————————————————————————————- Option 2: Collect an Oral History Collect an Oral History - Assignment Description (Word doc) Word Document

You will have 1.5 hours (90 minutes) to take it, so make sure you that you have prepared, and have organized the course materials so that you can access them during the exam.

Note: I highly recommend being very familiar with the sites listed on the study guide - make a list of those sites in your study notes with the important information about each. | | Anthropology Project | Intent Form | Please let me know what you plan to do for your Applying Anthropology Project in this short intent form (this will only take about 5 minutes). If you have any questions feel free to contact me - I'm here to help! (Your actual Applying Anthropology Projects are due by Sunday, 7/20.)

Note: If you have already done the data collection part of your project (gone to the zoo, a site, or done your interview) I ask that you still complete this form - you can just answer the questions in past tense. | | Discussion 1: | Cracking The Maya Code | This is a great film about Maya writing and history.

***Make sure to specifically tie in and reference one of the PowerPoints above into your posts.  Some of you lost points for not doing this in your last discussion, so please be sure to do this so you can get full credit.

Note: the film loses sound for about 20 seconds in the middle from 37:20-37:41, but then corrects itself.  |
